Why we get high - Introducing the ECS

The endocannbinoid system (below we will sometimes refer to it as the ECS to save keystrokes) is the reason for us to be able to feel the effects of cannabis. The external cannabinoid THC (and other ones like CBD, CBN, CBC, THC-V etc) interacts with the ECS in a way that affects us. THC specifically binds to CB1 receptors in our brain and throughout our body, leading to us being able to get high.

Discovery

The endocannabinoid system was discovered relatively recently in the late 20th century, around 1992.

This discovery lead to a monumental shift in the understanding of our body’s complete nervous system. Before the discovery of ECS the science around our nervous system was clear: it was one way traffic from the brain, out. After the discovery of ECS that science changed. They now realized that our nervous system in fact is two way traffic, and that the ESC is responsible for directing the traffic other direction.

What Does the ECS Do?

The endocannabinoid system is like a conductor of an orchestra, ensuring that all the instruments (bodily functions) are playing in harmony.

It plays a crucial role in:

Mood Regulation: The ECS helps regulate mood and emotions. CB1 receptors in the brain play a significant role in this aspect.

Pain Management: Endocannabinoids can modulate pain perception, offering a natural way to alleviate discomfort.

Immune Function: CB2 receptors are involved in regulating immune responses, potentially contributing to the body's defense against illness.

Appetite and Metabolism: The ECS influences hunger and metabolism, making it important in maintaining a healthy weight.

Sleep Patterns: Many people find relief from sleep disturbances through ECS modulation.

External Cannabinoids and the ECS (why we get high):

In addition to endocannabinoids, external cannabinoids, like those found in cannabis, also interact with the ECS. THC, for example, binds to CB1 receptors, leading to its psychoactive effects, while CBD can influence the ECS indirectly by enhancing the availability of endocannabinoids, making the system run smoother.
