We hear a lot about the male pioneers of techno, but Detroit has long been home to some seriously good women producers and DJs too. To name a few: the late, great, K-Hand; DJ Minx, who has been receiving her long overdue flowers the past few years, Whodat, Rebecca Goldberg, and Ladymonix, originally from Baltimore but a Detroit local for some years now. Since 2018 she’s been putting out heat on her own label Frizner Electric, kicking off with the fantastic Bc I Want To EP. Fast forward six years and she’s put out six more releases on Frizner, and last year released her first EP on Studio Barnhus. Established in Stockholm in 2010 by Kornél Kovács, Petter Nordkvist and Axel Boman, this Swedish label specialises in often off-kilter but highly danceable gems and has been home to some of the finest dance music of the past decade. Her Welcome 2 My House EP for Studio Barnhus suitably featured some of her moodiest and wooziest cuts yet; like she’s found the freedom to get a little weirder than usual. It suits her.

When it comes to the weirder side of Detroit techno, few do it better than BMG, founder of Ectomorph, Interdimensional Transmissions, and the No Way Back parties. He’s heading up another stinking good Nonstop lineup that includes LA-based garage and bass head Introspekt and Salon des Amateurs resident Vladimir Ivkovic.

It’s a natural wine party this weekend at Roberta’s, where you can get unlimited pours for $69 from 2pm to 8pm in the Tasting Tent. Music comes from a host of local talent including Amelia Holt, Miles Robbins and Cole Evelev, and the party runs from 2pm Saturday til 10pm Sunday, so there’s plenty of time to drop in for a slice, sip and boogie.
