It’s hard to imagine Brooklyn without any nightclubs but 11 years ago, that was the reality. There was a decent warehouse scene in the industrial area of East Williamsburg but other than that, partying was a thing that happened almost strictly in Manhattan.

In 2013 however, that all changed. In a one year period, three clubs opened; Output, Verboten, and Good Room. Spearheaded by `90s ravers who wanted to bring back the heyday of NYC club culture, the three clubs transformed Brooklyn into the international nightlife destination it is today. Output was modeled after Berghain except there was no hassle at the door, Verboten was opened in an old manufacturing warehouse to bring some of Europe’s best DJs to Williamsburg, and Good Room was opened by music lovers for music lovers in a place where anything goes for DJs and dancers.

These three clubs paved the way for Brooklyn’s nightlife renaissance. In the 10 years since, internationally regarded clubs like Nowadays and Public Records have opened, live music venues like Elsewhere and Brooklyn Steel have opened, and even 4000 people mega clubs have opened. There are also smaller, more intimate dancefloors at clubs like Jupiter Disco and Black Flamingo.

While Output and Verboten have since closed (RIP), Good Room remains in Greenpoint. Tucked in between residential buildings and a police station, it’s the last place you’d expect to find a club but after all these years, they’re still open every weekend. Good Room is celebrating its 9th Anniversary this weekend. They’ve put together local line ups with some of the best in the scene across Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. This week, we raise a glass to one of the clubs that changed it all.

NYC Nightlife 10/19-10/21

10.19-21 - Good Room’s 9th Anniversary

Good Room is a tried and true nightclub. It’s the kind of place you could show up any night and know you’re going to have a good time, regardless of who is playing. Their 9th Anniversary line up reflects that ethos. They’ve booked the discofied sounds of Razor-N-Tape on Thursday, the rave spirit of Kim Ann Foxman and Gee Dee on Friday, and the sonic adventures of Love Injection and Love Tempo on Saturday. Pick any one of those nights for a guaranteed good time.

10.21 - Budino at Public Records

For some DJs, music will forever be in the foreground of their mind; every free moment is spent searching for new music or conceiving ways to blend new discoveries. Italian-born, Berlin-based Budino is one of these DJs. She is on a constant quest for fresh material to weave in her sets – sets that take dancers down a psychedelic path of trance-inducing beats, tribal percussion, and cosmic textures. It’s these kinds of journeys that have made her a resident at legendary European parties like Cocktail D’Amore and Love International. You have a chance to experience one of these journeys for yourself at Public Records this Saturday.

10.21 - Planet B and Ivan Berko at Jupiter Disco

Planet B and Ivan Berko may not be household names but in our opinion, they’re two of New York’s heavy hitters. Underrated would be another good way to describe them. Between the two of them, they have more than 30 years experience behind the decks. They’re both prolific diggers, always searching for party jams that no one has ever heard that might be the best thing you’ve heard when they play it. And they’re both low key, so there’s not a lot of information about them on the internet - just trust us when we say you should go see them at Jupiter Disco on Saturday night.
