Masters At Work

Masters At Work

What do the headliners of our three party picks this week have in common? All have been around a long, long time, and while DJing is a pursuit that increasingly favours the young and photogenic, there’s no replacement for the years of knowledge and experience that these three bring to the decks. French veteran Jennifer Cardini was foundational in cultivating the Parisian scene in the late ‘90s, where she earned legendary status at the now-closed Le Pulp nightclub, and she’s still heavily booked everywhere from Panorama Bar to Sonar Festival. Matias Aguayo is one of house music’s most enduring oddballs, a fiercely original producer whose 2008 track “Minimal”, remixed by DJ Koze, poked fun at the stripped-down genre that dominated dancefloors in the mid ‘00s and was an instant classic upon its release. Maurice Fulton is another producer’s producer, a Baltimore-born, Sheffield-based maverick whose records can be found in any self-respecting house head’s collection and whose DJing is regularly and accurately described as genius. We love to celebrate fresh talent here at Studio TBD but we also firmly believe in learning from the greats. If you’re yet to experience the magic of Cardini, Aguayo or Fulton, it’s high time you did something about that this weekend.

3.29 Escape with Jennifer Cardini, Junior M, Arvin T + Shyboi at Paragon

Variety is the spice of life at Escape at Paragon this Friday, featuring a broad range of selectors bound to tickle many fancies. Correspondant boss Jennifer Cardini is headlining with what will surely be a heady dose of cosmic disco par excellence. Elsewhere, NYC’s favourite meme maker Arvin T is playing his beloved Italo and EBM, Junior M fka False Witness has promised “nudes in bio” energy, and Shyboi will serve pounding beats and high BPMs to keep the basement locked.

3.29 Matias Aguayo at Good Room

Chilean-German producer and DJ Matias Aguayo is a leading figure of the South American scene who founded his esteemed Cómeme label in 2009 to push diverse sounds from the continent. Releasing music since the ‘90s — then as part of a little-known duo called Zimt with Kompakt boss Michael Mayer — his flamboyant, idiosyncratic sound is hard to describe and impossible to imitate. You’d best just come see it for yourself. Supported by fellow Latin Americans Dam Vera and Irina Stanisic, alongside Good Bar regular Timo Lee.

3.30 Maurice Fulton and musclecars at Le Bain

Maurice Fulton has a long-running residency at Le Bain for a reason — he’s one of the finest producers and DJs on the planet, an endlessly inventive tunemaker who’s collaborated with everyone from Roisin Murphy to Peggy Gou, and his reverence for house and disco makes him a perfect fit for the city’s shiniest establishment. He’s joined by stellar New York duo musclecars, set to release their long-awaited debut album in May which has already been supported by Fulton himself, Gilles Peterson and Louie Vega. It’s free, but RSVP and arrive early to secure entrance.
